a photo uploader for Linux, Mac and Windows

Juploadr is seeing other people

Well, it looks like the the cat is out of the bag, jUploadr will be Zooomr’s official bulk uploader. We’re still working out a couple of details, but the progress in getting this to work has been excellent, and once Zooomr’s API fills in some gaps, jUploadr will be just as functional with it as it is with Flickr.

This does not mean that jUploadr will no longer support flickr –not by a long shot. All my photos are on Flickr, and as of right now, I don’t intend to move them to Zooomr (I still have a half-year of my subscription left). Furthermore, in addition to Zooomr support, the 1.1 release will include some really cool new features such as upload bandwidth throttling and tag completion/help.

Here’s to the future of interoperability and freedom of choice between Flickr and Zooomr.

P.S. It’s really funny how jUploadr merits being Zooomr’s main bulk uploader, but doesn’t get even a link or mention on Flickr’s third party application page. Why does it get no Flickr love?

You are right, the flickr admins are very idiots. And you right in go other photo site, where you are respected. I’m signup in zoomr and if you need more translations for your new version, I’m here to help you.
    See you later ! :D

  2. scohen Says:

Thanks Guiliano, but I’m not sure they’re idiots. Maybe they just hate bluejays.

  3. Allen Says:

That’s great! I’m looking forward to it. :)

  4. Carsten Ringe Says:

I hope you won’t drop support for Flickr in jUploadr at all. I love Flickr and definitly will stay there with all my photos. But I love jUploadr too and it’s the only convinient way to upload pictures for multi-OS users. :-)

  5. scohen Says:

“I hope you won’t drop support for Flickr in jUploadr at all.”

Don’t fear Carsten, I will never drop support for Flickr, that’s where all of my photos are as well, and I don’t think I’m going to switch services any time soon. It’s too big of a pain in the butt at this point.

Just to be clear, jUploadr was designed to support multiple upload sites, and zooomr support is just the second plugin (flickr was the first).

  6. jc Says:

now for a way to import/export/copy from Flickr to Zoomr and back. and for a way do a bulk download of all my flickr pics to my harddrive.

  7. Jason Dunsmore Says:

Thanks for the great program! It’s much better than Flickr’s Uploadr. I suggested that they add your program to the uploading tools page in the support forum.

I found a few bugs and posted them here:
    http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?atid=709422&group_id=127771&func=browse

I also made one new feature request here:

  8. Gareth Says:

When can we expect Juploadr 1.1 to be released?

I’m a Zooomr user and have lost my copy of the version of Juploadr that Kris modified to allow it to be used with Zooomr. Do you know where I can get a copy of this version of Juploadr?

Let me know if I can help in anyway.

  9. Lon Says:

is there a way for juploadr to authorize to zooomr yet? it takes me directly to flickr authorization right now. Thanks for what you’re doing!

  10. Erasable Ink Says:

JR: Check out FlickrBackup, for bulk download of all your flickr pics. http://www.sunkencity.org/flickrbackup/

    Jason:
Thanks, I’ve modified one of your bugs as it’s already been fixed in 1.1, but since 1.1 isn’t out yet, I posted some information on how you can fix the out of memory bug right now. Visit your bug report and the description is there. Thanks for telling the flickrinis to post jUploadr, but it’s been done before. Like I said, they don’t like bluejays.

    Gareth:
1.1 is due out shortly (within the next week or so). I have fairly high standards for my little app, and I don’t want to release it before it’s ready. I had a bad release a while back with 0.7, and I don’t want to repeat that. I understand that all the zooomerites are chomping at the bit to have a bulk uploader, but believe me, 1.1 is worth the wait.

    Lon:
If you’re really desperate, you *can* download the source code from CVS and build it yourself ;) JUploadr 1.0 (the one available for download in binary form) isn’t able to talk with zooomr, but, as I’ve said before, 1.1 will be able to communicate with both.

Hope that helps, and thanks for the kind words.

  12. Lon Says:

Thanks for the response… i wish i knew how to do that. I’ll just hold out and wait till 1.1 is where you feel it should be. thanks again!

  13. Adora Says:

Will jUploadr support the ability to tag and describe a set of photos once locally, then be able to upload to both sites? I use flickr to power my falbum on my blog, but have a separate flickr account that I keep clean to share pictures with my family. I’m not too keen on paying another $25 for pro for that account though, so I’ve got some empty zooomr accounts just waiting for a tool like yours to help turn my workflow into a wetdream.

And if you decide to scratch that itch and sneak out a few copies of the new version a day early, my email address ain’t hard to find. =]

  14. scohen Says:

“Will jUploadr support the ability to tag and describe a set of photos once locally, then be able to upload to both sites?”

Yes, as long as you don’t select ‘Remove all uploade photos’. Switching from Flickr to Zooomr resets the uploaded status on all of your photos, allowing you to immediately send them to an alternate site with all of your tags intact.

  15. Sohil Says:

scohen, How long (Sorry for asking) ? I’m switching to Zooomr so I have 100s of pics I want to upload.

Can you atleast put up a Beta version please.

Unfortunately I don’t know how to build.

  16. Stewart Butterfield Says:

Hi Steve - I just noticed this thread on a visit when recommending jUploadr to someone who was having trouble with the official Mac uploader. I apologize for not having list it on the tools page - it is mostly because we are “very idiots” and was definitely not intentional or because we hate bluejays ;)

We’ll make sure a link to it goes up shortly!

  17. scohen Says:

    Sohil:
It’s coming soon.. I’m having a fair amount of trouble with the automatic scaling and image quality, but I think I’ve got those problems licked (sort of). jUploadr 1.1 has a boatload of new features, but they’re all in there, and I’m waiting for them to settle.
Just know, I’ve been getting it from all sides, Kris from Zooomr pesters me daily, as jUploadr is essential to having a good Zooomr experience.

So, to sum up: I’ve just finished adding some polishing features to the 1.1 branch, and will be sending out a new release to my beta test users tomorrow, I’ll know how stable the thing is by wednesday, and we might have a release soon after.

If that’s not soon enough, google around and send me an email (my address is not terribly hard to find), and I’ll let you grab the latest work.

    Stewart:
It’s awesome that you recommend jUploadr to people that have trouble with the flickr uploader, I saw you do so in a couple posts on the uploader groups when the authentication mechanism switched. I really appreciate the links as well. Thanks a ton.

  18. Sohil Says:

scohen, Thanks for the quick reply. I’m eagerly waiting.

  19. KwajKid Says:

    Hey Steve,

Thomas posted on his blog that you’re looking for a few more beta testers for jUploadr 1.1. Bulk upload capability is the only thing holding me back from wider Zooomr use, so I’d love to help if I can. I’ve got around 2,400 photos I’d like to get up there, and there’s no way it will happen ten at a time….

I’m familiar with the Sourceforge bug tracker. I also spent a few years at IBM in hard drive development/qualification, so I’ve written a lot of errata reports and can fully document any issues I find.

  20. Vinny Says:

    Hey Steve,

I think I would be a great candidate because I’m about to remove all of my photos from flickr and move them to Zooomr (about 276 of them). It would be relatively close to being all at once, and frankly it would be like a torture test.

If you’ll have me, I’d love to Beta the new version of Juploadr for you.

    Vincent Ferrari

  21. Stephen Says:

    mactel version????

  22. Mojo Denbow Says:

    Howdy Steve,
I’ll throw my hat into the ring to test the uploader for Zooomr. I’m a Zooomr pro as well as a Flickr pro but the real reason I haven’t made the switch to Z fully is the 10 pic limit upload. That doesn’t cut it. I’ll test the heck out of your app, offer my 2 cents and with permission, review it on my website.
    Best regards,

  23. John Piercy Says:

I cant change my username in Juploadr
    any help would be appreciated

  24. scohen Says:

With 1.0, the only way to do this is to reset your preferences with the –reset-preferences command line switch.

1.1 will have much more advanced user management capabilities.

Does anyone know of a way to download from Flickr to a FTP server (better: SSH/SFTP) instead of my hard drive?

Would make things easier and reduce bandwidth a lot!
Currently I can only use Dial-up and it would cost me an arm and a leg to download my pictures from Flickr (i.e. via FlickrDown) and upload them to my FTP server. ;-)

    Thanks,
    Chris
