a photo uploader for Linux, Mac and Windows

Overview

jUploadr is a cross platform, cross-site Photo uploader. Currently it runs on Windows Linux and OS X and supports both Flickr and Zooomr. It allows you to set all properties of a photo before you upload it. It also supports batch editing, so you can make short work of uploading a bunch of files.

0.8 is out

October 30th, 2005

It took a little longer than I wanted, but 0.8 has finally hit the streets. There are a whole lot of new features such as:

  • image rotation for groups and individual images
  • Ability to create and add photos to photo sets
  • Sorting by EXIF date taken
  • Spanish translation

There are actually quite a few more features, be sure to check out the changelog for all the details.
In addition, all of the open bugs have been fixed, so it’s just new bugs from here on out. So download away!

Plea for help

If anyone can reproduce the crash bug reported here please get in touch with me, I think I have a fix and need you to test it (it works for me).

0.8.1

December 29th, 2005

Looks like it’s time for jUploadr’s first bug-fix release. Not much is new here, but I did fix all the open bugs.
It’s a bit strange that I couldn’t duplicate any of them, but I did come up with a work around. Thank you to all those that sent me stack traces, they were invaluable in fixing the bug. Go Grab it!

Announcing jUploadr 1.0 (sort of)

February 16th, 2006

Hi all,
I’ve released jUploadr 1.0 RC1. Barring any bugs, this will be the 1.0 release. I haven’t added too many features, but I think I finally fixed the upload ordering bugs. I did throw in a couple goodies though.

  • You can no longer add the same photo twice to the app. It detects this, shows an error message and highlights the photo you added
  • Thanks to Carsten Ringe, jUploadr now has a German translation.

Enjoy!

Help spread the love

April 1st, 2006

A couple of months ago, I asked flickr if they would post jUploadr in the list of linux uploaders that they keep on this page or even this page. I received no reply, and it’s still not up there. I find this strange because I occasionally do google searches on ‘jUploadr’, and the overwhelming majority of people really love it. Additionally, the uploaders that they do feature are old proof-of-concept things with none of the features jUploadr has. Heck, glimmr doesn’t even work any more, and it has a link.

So, maybe my users can help rectify this injustice. Would you guys please send an email asking flickr to post a link to jUploadr’s home page? If you do that, I promise 1.0 final will come out next week.

1.0 Status

April 13th, 2006

1.0 is right around the corner, but a few things need to happen first. First off, IBM has responded to the long standing bug that would cause some progressive JPEGs to consume gobs and gobs of ram. This seems to have been fixed in the 3.2 SWT release but saving these images is still not supported. I’m in an ongoing discussion with someone at IBM to remedy this situation. The image saving problem only occurs if you re-size images before upload, and I have a workaround in place for this. I expect to have a resolution in the next week or so. If I end up using the SWT 3.2 API, you users will be in for a treat. All the image loading/resizing code is now native which results in a remarkable 4x speedup when dropping images into jUploadr. Woot!

Some users have already suggested ideas for the 1.1 release. So far, the only thing that’s certainly going to be in there is upload bandwidth throttling, but I’d love to hear where you think the user experience could be improved. I’ve had a suggestion to include a file browser, but personally, I think that jUploadr should stick to what it’s good at.

Any thoughts?

Authorization Failed

April 17th, 2006

Windows users: If you try to authorize and get a dialog box with the words “Authorization Failed” right after clicking the Authorize button, I have advice for you.

Do not double-click on juploadr.jar to launch the application. Use jUploadr.bat instead.

That is all.

jUploadr 1.0

May 8th, 2006

It’s official, jUploadr is now at 1.0. Admittedly, there aren’t that many changes between this release and the 1.0RC1 release, but I did manage to sneak in one goodie for everyone.
There’s been an open bug for a couple of months now that really isn’t jUploadr’s fault. When you add a progressive JPEG to jUploadr, the bug in the underlying libraries would cause jUploadr to consume gobs of memory. For instance, the image that I’ve been using to test is only 700k, but it causes jUploadr to consume 100 MEGS of ram.

I filed a bug with the kind folks at IBM (the makers of the library) and in fixing it, they exceeded my expectations. Not only can you load a progressive JPEG, image loading in general is much faster than it was before. How much faster? A 3 megabyte image would take roughly 20 seconds to load in jUploadr 1.0RC1, jUploadr 1.0 loads it in 2 seconds. Zoom!

In addition, all bugs have been fixed, so it should be smooth sailing from here on to 1.1. Download away!

Juploadr is seeing other people

June 30th, 2006

Well, it looks like the the cat is out of the bag, jUploadr will be Zooomr’s official bulk uploader. We’re still working out a couple of details, but the progress in getting this to work has been excellent, and once Zooomr’s API fills in some gaps, jUploadr will be just as functional with it as it is with Flickr.

This does not mean that jUploadr will no longer support flickr –not by a long shot. All my photos are on Flickr, and as of right now, I don’t intend to move them to Zooomr (I still have a half-year of my subscription left). Furthermore, in addition to Zooomr support, the 1.1 release will include some really cool new features such as upload bandwidth throttling and tag completion/help.

Here’s to the future of interoperability and freedom of choice between Flickr and Zooomr.

P.S. It’s really funny how jUploadr merits being Zooomr’s main bulk uploader, but doesn’t get even a link or mention on Flickr’s third party application page. Why does it get no Flickr love?

jUploadr finally gets Flickr love

July 29th, 2006

How cool is this? I’ll tell you, VERY cool. The flickr guys and girls finally gave jUploadr recognition, and they did it in typical Flickr fashion. All I really wanted was a puny link on the third party applications page but no, they put it right below the official uploader on their main tools page. Then Stewart (you know, the head flickrini) posts on jUploadr’s blog and lets it slip that he recommends jUploadr to people that have problems with the official uploader.

Thanks Flickr!

p.s. Wait until you see 1.1…
